Anime and Manga: Japanese Animation and Comics

Anime:
These are japanese animated movies or TV series. Many european productions are being drawed in Japan, too, but only those with a japanese storywriter or music composer are considered Anime. For example the american TV show Transformers: The robots with morphing abilities were designed in Japan, but the story and the music is american as well as the animation.

Anime aren't so popular in countries outside Japan for a couple of reasons: Most of the productions are aimed towards 'big kids'. They're considered to be too violent for children (e.g. spaceships shooting at each other), but the older viewers think they're too old for these animated shows. In Japan, there seem to exist much more of these 'big kids' as in other countries. Anime normally have a good storyline and complex character development. Unfortunately, the dubbing (new voices in the appropriate language) often destroys the original dialogues replacing them for example with dumb phrases (considered to be fit for children). And violent/"erotic" scenes are often censored to perform an additional blow on the original.

You want Anime and Manga on the WWW or FTP? You can have it. Here are a couple of sites with a tremendous collection of links. You can go to far more than 1000 locations from there. Each allows to add new sites.

Japanese/English On-line Dictionary
Perhaps useful for bit more understanding of Animes when you watch them in the original version. Doesn't keep you from learning Japanese, does it? Of course this is suitable also for people who have a general interest in the Japanese language. I recommend a Japanese capable browser for optimal usage.

My favourite Anime:

You might think, Akira is my favourite anime. It isn't. I'll tell you the reasons at the home page. So here are my objects of desire (no particular order):

These anime are somewhat nice, too:

  • Captain Future
  • Doraemon
  • Akira (but not one of the favourites)
  • Dragonball (Well, more the manga)
  • Lupin III
  • The Rose of Versailles
  • Spaceship Sagittarius
  • Space Cruiser Yamato
  • Slayers
  • Super Atragon
  • X
  • Mononoke Hime

(to be continued . . .)

I've seen many more on German TV but they're too unknown so I decided not to list them. You can look them up in the Anime on German TV Home Page. The page is in German, though.

I can't wait to watch these:

Manga:
This is practically the same as anime, but these are fat comic books of about 200 pages each. Most Manga are a sampler of various comic stories which are all continued in the next volume. If a story becomes popular, special books are printed. Mangas aren't popular outside Japan, too:
The japanese read their books from behind, so it's very difficult to make a western version. And most of the Manga are black/white while in the western world, coloured comics are preferred.
However, there's an exception:
AKIRA is the most popular and longest Manga ever!

Have fun at the Akira Home Page !
